INTRODUCTION: Announcing the 49th CLASP meeting, scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. (registration from 7:30 – 8:00 a.m.) on November 14, 2017 and continue through 4 p.m. (tentatively) on November 15. The host will be the Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, Albuquerque, NM 87123. Meeting will be held at the PRS Conference Center (Building 201). This meeting will be at the classified level both days and is open to government, industry and academia that have the appropriate clearance.
BACKGROUND: CLASP began in the mid-80s, originally assembled to coordinate light armor activities between the U.S. Army and United States Marine Corps. During the past ~35 years CLASP has provided a venue for working level discussions and has expanded to sharing information between Government services, industry and academia in virtually all areas of survivability. The name, CLASP, highlights light armor discussions due to its origin but is much more today.
CLASP is a “working-level” meeting for engineers and technical personnel from both the Science and Technology development as well as systems engineers from the Program Management arena to exchange information. This creates an ideal opportunity for the technology developers to get direct feedback from the platform system engineer. As such, the vast majority of the discussions will be technical in nature. This is an ideal opportunity for leading industry and academic research teams to meet with their Government counterparts. We will be discussing current programs and current issues of interest to the survivability community.
MEETING FORMAT: All presentations should be planned for approximately 20 minutes with time included for questions and answers. INDUSTRY PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRIEF the technical aspects of an ongoing survivability effort that is funded by a government agency. This is required for three reasons:
- To ensure that all participants are contributing to the meeting.
- To keep the gathering to a reasonable size.
- Eliminate marketing briefings
Industry participants, be advised that if there are fellow industry participants in the audience who you would rather not have present during your presentation, you may request that they leave the room. You, the presenter, are solely responsible for any need to know restrictions and authorizations required for your presentation.
Step 1 - This applies to all briefers (government, industry, and academia). Please submit an unclassified Title and brief abstract to the Chairman, Ken Branham at firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your organization and state whether or not the presentation will be classified. If it is classified, what Security classification Guide is being used. Cut-off date for all Title/Abstract submittal (ALL ABSTRACTS NEED TO BE UNCLASSIFIED) is 20 October 17.
Step 2 - You will be notified whether your abstract was or was not accepted within 1 week of receipt.
Step 3 - If you are industry or academia and your abstract was accepted, two representatives may register. If you are government and your abstract was not accepted, you may still register at the website and attend. Registrants will undergo an approval process, which includes clearance validation, to determine attendance. Light refreshments will be provided, and attendees will be asked to provide a nominal payment of between $10 and $15 per meeting day (actual total may be less and will be determined after purchases are completed).
Step 4 – If you are presenting, presentations need to be received by AFRL no later than November 8.

It is preferred that classified briefings be sent via SIPRnet, however, mailed CDs will also be accepted for those who do not have access to that system. (CDs will not be returned).
AGENDA: The meeting will include presentations from the Department of Defense and industry personnel on state-of-the-art research in ballistics protection including armor system development, light armor upgrades, material model development, and landmine blast attenuation to name a few. In addition, we plan to have a tour of the AFRL laser facility. Agenda updates will be provided on the website.
Additional key information regarding the latest agenda, security, and clearances are available at the website. Other than the refreshment “donations” during the meeting sessions, there is no registration fee because this is not a conference.
