Is there research regarding explosives bonding materials for thermobaric devices?
A DSIAC subject matter expert (SME) with Johns Hopkins University specializing in thermobarics, Dr. Gregory Aranovich, researched patents and other information related to using boron compounds in thermobaric devices (TBXs) and fuel air explosives (FAEs). Based on his previous experience with thermobaric explosives and this research, he identified that unmanned aircraft systems (UAS’s) have not yet been used to disperse TBXs or FAEs, but it could be an innovative technique. The SME also provided patents and articles related to using boron in TBXs and FAEs. The SME discussed using boron compounds for neutron radiation suppression and also noted that he could not find any published papers or patents using thermobaric boron-based compounds in this manner. A summary of the findings was documented into a report that was delivered to the inquirer.
